How it works

1. Fill in one form below: up to 5 ancestors, what you know about them, and your family tree file or link if you have one.
2. Pay $29 on Stripe's secure page. It renews monthly until you cancel.
3. Read your page. Within 7 business days you get a private web page with your report, your family tree and any letters we drafted for you to send.
4. Next month, pick the next question or ancestor, and we keep going.

What's on your page each month

  • A plain-English report: what we found, where, and what it means
  • A source for every fact, labeled confirmed likely or family story
  • Your family tree file (GEDCOM) to keep, and a simple chart
  • Up to two draft letters to archives or parishes, in their own language with an English translation, for you to send
  • A list of every search, including the ones that found nothing
Genealogy records only, not DNA. This membership researches public genealogy records, like census, birth, marriage and death records, church registers, immigration and passenger lists, and old newspapers. It doesn't include DNA testing or DNA-based ancestry research. Want DNA-based answers?
Public records only. Our research uses free public records. It doesn't use FamilySearch data, because FamilySearch doesn't allow AI tools to use its data without written permission. You're welcome to use FamilySearch.org yourself.

From our test run

We tested Genealogist Bot™ on a historical, publicly documented family: Amedeo Obici (1877–1947), who left Oderzo, Italy, at age 11. Part of what it reported, from free public sources only:

✅ Found in the free Pennsylvania death index (1947): Amedeo Obici, Wilkes-Barre, died 5/21/47, certificate no. 45534. likely ⚠️ Sources disagree: an online encyclopedia says he died at his Virginia farm. Two 1947 newspaper reports and the state index say a Wilkes-Barre hospital. 📭 Not online: Oderzo's 1877 birth registers. A letter in Italian to the town's civil registry was drafted, with an English translation, to send.

Your results depend on which records exist and are open to the public for your family.

DNA RESEARCH, ASKED FOR SEPARATELY

Want DNA-based answers?

Some family questions can't be answered from paper records alone. If you've taken a DNA test, or you're thinking about taking one, you can ask for DNA-based research from our forensic genetic genealogist.

This is separate from the $29 membership. Tell us a little about your question and which tests you've taken, and we'll reply personally to talk it through. There's no cost to ask.

We never ask for your Social Security number, ID numbers, bank details or passwords.

Don't enter them here. Payment happens only on Stripe's secure page.

About you
Your ancestors

List up to 5 ancestors. Each month we research one ancestor or one question, starting with the first one. Next month we move to the next one on your list, or anything new you ask us.

Already have a family tree? (optional)

Already have a family tree saved? Most family tree programs and sites (Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, Family Tree Maker, RootsMagic) can save your tree as one file ending in .ged (a GEDCOM file). If you have one, attach it here. If not, skip it, or paste a link to your online tree.

How do I get that file? In your tree program or site, look for "Export", "Download" or "Share tree" and choose GEDCOM (.ged). It saves one file you can attach here.

Your file is stored privately and used only to research your family. It's never posted publicly. Living people in it stay private.

Agreements

Next step: after you send this form, we take you to Stripe's secure checkout for $29 a month. Research starts after your payment arrives.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Questions about Genealogist Bot™ on the web

Why trace my family?

Many people want to save their family's stories for their children and grandchildren. Old records can also show things like where your family came from, their jobs, and, on some death records, causes of death, which can add to what you know about your family's health history. Some people also want to join a heritage society, like the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) or the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). Those societies require documented proof of each generation back to a Revolutionary War patriot.

Can you help with a DAR or SAR application?

Yes, with the research part. See our guide, Getting your records together for a DAR or SAR application. We look for the public records for each generation, like birth, marriage, death, census and church records, and organize them by generation with a source for each one. The society decides whether your proof is accepted. We are not affiliated with DAR or SAR, and we can't guarantee an application will be approved.

What records do you use?

Free public genealogy records: census records, birth, marriage and death records, church registers, immigration and passenger lists, cemetery records, archives and old newspapers. We don't use DNA, and we don't use FamilySearch data, because FamilySearch doesn't allow AI tools to use its data without written permission. You're welcome to use FamilySearch.org yourself.

What if I want DNA research?

The membership doesn't include DNA testing or DNA-based research. If you've taken a DNA test, or want to, you can request DNA-based research from our forensic genetic genealogist. We'll reply personally.

What's a GED file?

A GED (GEDCOM) file is the standard file that family tree programs use to save and share a tree. Most programs and sites, like Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, Family Tree Maker and RootsMagic, can export one. Look for "Export" or "Download" and choose GEDCOM. You can attach it to the form so we start from what you already have. It's optional.

Can I list several ancestors?

Yes. Add up to 5 on the form. Each month we research one ancestor or one question, starting with the first. Then we move down your list month by month, or to anything new you ask us.

What do I get each month?

One research round on the ancestor or question you choose: a written report in plain English with a source for every fact, your updated family tree file (GEDCOM) and chart, and up to two draft letters to archives or parishes for records that aren't online. It all goes on your private web page within 7 business days after that month's payment and your form.

Do I need Grok Bot or any app?

No. You fill in one form and read your results on a web page. Nothing to install or set up.

Who does the research?

Our Genealogist Bot™, an AI researcher, does the searching and writing. Its method and rules were designed with our forensic genetic genealogist. No person reviews your tree, so please check the sources it cites before you rely on a result.

Will you send letters to archives for me?

No. We draft each letter in the archive's own language with an English translation. You send it and pay any archive fee directly to the archive.

How do I cancel?

Any time. Email hello@botsonthejob.com. We stop your next renewal, and you keep your page until the end of the month you've paid for. Download anything you want to keep; we delete your page 30 days after your membership ends.

Is anything guaranteed?

No. We find what public records allow. Some records were lost, are restricted, or aren't online yet. Not finding a record isn't a reason for a refund.
